STAMFORD, CT - Stamford Public Schools, in coordination with the City of Stamford’s Recycling and Sanitation Department, announce Dolan Middle School Eighth Grader Kaitlin Doyle as the winner of the Recycle Bag Art Contest.

In preparation for the City of Stamford’s upcoming ban on plastic bags, the Recycling and Sanitation Department held a contest for students in Stamford to design a logo for a reusable bag that will be distributed at the City’s upcoming Earth Day event. Doyle, a student of Dolan Art Teacher Jennifer Marchetti, created the winning design which will be featured on bags distributed at the City’s upcoming Earth Day event.

“We received many entries that exhibited students’ interpretation of recycling and how it affects the world we live in,” said Art Teacher and Content Leader Module Downer. “Although several of them were excellent ideas, we chose the design that was most unique and best reflected Stamford's mission on recycling.”

The contest was organized by Downer, as well as Supervisor of Recycling & Sanitation Dan Collelouri. Each design was graded on its ability to clearly demonstrate the benefits of recycling, as well as the quality of the art itself.

“Holding the contest was a creative way to engage students in the City’s effort to change behaviors around the use of plastic bags,” said Colleluori. “Residents who attend our Earth Day event will have the added benefit of taking home a reusable bag that features student artwork.”

The City of Stamford’s Earth Day Event will take place on April 22nd from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Stamford Government Center Lobby, 888 Washington Boulevard. Residents can attend the event and receive free reusable bags, including a bag with the Doyle’s winning design.
